A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

The class and I stumbled upon this marching band in front of the Pantheon today, just in time to hear them play the Italian national anthem. A real Roman Carpe Diem moment!

Liturgical: Tuesday of the 31st Week in Ordinary Time

Romans 12:5-16ab

So we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are.

Sanctoral: The Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Charles Borromeo (1538-1584), bishop. Charles was a member of a noble family and a nephew of Pope Pius IV. He was made a Cardinal at the age of 23 and assisted the Pope in administering the affairs of the Holy See and in governing the Church. Soon thereafter he was made Archbishop of Milan. His endeavors on behalf of the 19th Ecumenical Council of Trent (1545-1564) were especially meritorious and fruitful. He helped to direct and guide it and bring it to a successful conclusion. He then proceeded to enforce its decrees in the Archdiocese of Milan and thoroughly reformed Catholic life in his See. During a plague he walked barefooted in the public streets, carrying a cross, with a rope around his neck, offering himself as a victim to God for the transgressions of his people.

Human: 1979 — Iranian protesters stormed the US embassy in Tehran, beginning a hostage crisis that lasted over a year.

1946 — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially came into existence.

1922 — British archaeologist Howard Carter uncovered the sealed entrance to the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings.

1980 Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter in a landslide victory, signaling the start of a new conservative era in American politics. His campaign focused on economic recovery, national strength, and smaller government, themes that would define his presidency and reshape the Republican Party for decades.

Quote: "If we wish to make any progress in the service of God we must begin every day of our life with new eagerness... We must keep ourselves in the presence of God as much as possible and have no other view or end in all our actions but the divine honor. " --St. Charles Borromeo
