A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

ree

Another day, another pilgrimage to a patriarchal basilica! Today the class passed through the Holy Door of St. Paul-Outside-the-Walls, where Cardinal James Michael Harvey (from Milwaukee, Wisconsin) has served as the Archpriest since 2012. During our visit today, much comparison was drawn between the three year reconstruction of this basilica after the devastating fire of 1823 and the 2019 fire at the Cathedral of Notre Dame, which was reconstructed in five years.

“In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets."

Matthew 7:7-12

Sanctoral: Saint Leander of Seville, Spain +601

The next time you recite the Nicene Creed at Mass, think of today’s saint. For it was Leander of Seville who, as bishop, introduced the practice in the sixth century. He saw it as a way to help reinforce the faith of his people and as an antidote against the heresy of Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. By the end of his life, Leander had helped Christianity flourish in Spain at a time of political and religious upheaval.

Quote: "Now, I would like to give you a blessing, but first I want to ask you for a favor. Before the bishop blesses the people, I ask that you pray to the Lord so that he blesses me. This is the prayer of the people who are asking for the blessing of their bishop.

In silence, let us say this prayer of you for me.

Now, I will give you and the whole world a blessing, to all men and women of good will. Tomorrow, I want to go to pray to the Madonna so that she protects all of Rome. Good night and have a good rest."

Excerpted from Pope Francis' first address after his election on this date in 2013. He visited the Madonna he referenced before and after every trip made during his Pontificate; It is "Our Lady, Help of the Roman People" (Salus Populi Romani) located in Santa Maria Maggiore, where he has requested to be buried.
