A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

As you are probably already aware, the "Country Mouse/City Mouse" theme is one I frequently refer to, especially during the years when we split our time between a large farm in Remus and a small home in Rome. I chose these two photos, taken within 24 hours of each other, to highlight the contrast between our morning in Rome yesterday versus our morning in Assisi today. While the big city offers up lots of culture and glamour, one can become rather jaded by it all. An escape to a medieval hill town like Assisi, surrounded by green hills bursting with fragrant flowers, is restorative for both body and soul.

"There are also many other things that Jesus did,

but if these were to be described individually,

I do not think the whole world would contain the books

that would be written."

Bishop Barron's Gospel reflections today.

Tomorrow is the Solemnity of Pentecost, the end of the Easter season. Observance of the solemnity begins with First Vespers (Evening Prayer I) in the Liturgy of the Hours, and a special Vigil Mass before or after First Vespers. The liturgical day is from midnight to midnight in the Church's observance, except for Sunday and solemnities which begin with the evening of the preceding day.

Sanctoral: The Roman Martyrology commemorates St. Robert of Newminster (1100-1159). He was born at Gargrave in Yorkshire. He spent the early years of his priesthood as rector of his hometown but later joined the Benedictine community at Whitby. In 1132 he helped to establish Fountains Abbey which embraced the Cistercian rule of St. Bernard of Clairvaux. Fountains was to have a daughter abbey at Newminster near Morpeth and Robert became the first abbot in 1138/9. He died on June 7, 1159.

Human: In Ancient Rome today-- the Festival of Vesta Asperit was celebrated, devoted to the goddess of health, which began on June 7 and lasted until June 15. During this time, bakers and millers had a holiday and decorated their mills or mules with violets and other smaller flowers.

Natural: Ahhh, the sights and smells of Assisi's flowers!
