A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

We celebrated the beginning of the season of long summer nights with this beautiful view yesterday, atop a vine covered building near Piazza Navona, with some friends flying back to Texas today. Every quarter of an hour the light changed, with each palette seemingly more beautiful than the last until the blanket of darkness descended over the cityscape. It's so rare to see Rome from this height, and so peaceful. We were immediately inspired to create a list of Rome's best rooftops, which of course there are already many. My niece was engaged at the rooftop of Les Etoiles- excellent choice for the backdrop for your proposal, Tyler!

Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!”

John 16:29-33

Sanctoral: Saints Marcellinus and Peter, Rome (304 AD)

Marcellinus was a priest and Peter was an exorcist, that is, someone authorized by the Church to deal with cases of demonic possession. They were beheaded during the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. Pope Damasus wrote an epitaph apparently based on the report of their executioner, and Constantine erected a basilica over the crypt in which they were buried in Rome. Numerous legends sprang from an early account of their death.

Quote: Fratelli D’Italia – Italian National Anthem Lyrics (Short Version)

Fratelli d’Italia,

l’Italia s’è desta,

dell’elmo di Scipios’è cinta la testa.

Dov’è la Vittoria?

Le porga la chioma,

ché schiava di RomaIddio la creò.

Stringiamci a coorte,

siam pronti alla morte.

Siam pronti alla morte,

l’Italia chiamò.

Stringiamci a coorte,

siam pronti alla morte.

Siam pronti alla morte,

l’Italia chiamò! Sì!

Fratelli D’Italia – Italian National Anthem English Translated

Brothers of Italy,

Italy has awoken,

with Scipio’s helmet

Upon her head.

Where is Victory?

Let her bow down,

For God has made her

A slave of Rome.

Let us join in a cohort,

we are ready to die.

We are ready to die,

Italy has called.

Let us join in a cohort,

We are ready to die.

We are ready to die,

Italy has called! Yes!
