A Carpe Diem Snapshot:

Buona festa di San Nicola e buon onomastico a tutti i Nicola! To pay homage to this beloved and famous saint, I stopped by the church of San Nicola in Cacere (St. Nicholas in Prison). While the name of the church alludes to the ruins of a medieval prison beneath it, St. Nicholas was in fact imprisoned, as we see in the painting above. Here is the fascinating story of life of good St. Nick, and of this church so rich in Roman history. Tonight there is a special Mass here for the feast of the church's patron saint, presided over by Cardinal Tomasi, the titular cardinal. If you are in Rome this month on the 12th, this church is also a special place to visit on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, as there is a shrine dedicated to her here, where the Mexican College community gathers monthly on the 12th. The parish priest is an elderly Indian fellow who paused his dusting to put on his stole and take a few minutes to give me a blessing on this special feast day. If St. Nicholas is special to you or someone you love, you will enjoy this wonderful website dedicated entirely to him. One of these days I will make a pilgrimage to Bari, the resting place of the saint's relics.
